Swim with sea turtles in Akumal

Where to go, the rules to follow and how to make the most of it, from a condo a few minutes away.

Akumal means "place of the turtles" in Maya. Green sea turtles feed on the seagrass in the bay all year, which makes it one of the few places on the Riviera Maya where you can snorkel beside wild turtles in calm, shallow water.

Where to swim with turtles

  • Akumal Bay, about 10 minutes from U Nah Kin. The best-known spot: a protected bay with seagrass beds where turtles graze close to the surface.
  • Yal-Kú Lagoon, also about 10 minutes away. A sheltered lagoon with clear water and colourful fish, easy for beginners and children. Turtles are not guaranteed here.
  • The beach at Aventuras Akumal, in front of the condo. Quiet and good for swimming and kayaking, with turtle sightings possible but never promised.

Rules to follow

Akumal Bay is a protected area, and the rules protect the turtles and the seagrass they eat. They change from time to time, so confirm them on arrival. At the time of writing:

  • A certified local guide is required to snorkel in the bay, and a life vest is mandatory.
  • Look, do not touch. Never chase, ride, feed or crowd a turtle, and keep a respectful distance.
  • Use only reef-safe sunscreen, or wear a rash guard instead. Regular sunscreen damages the reef.
  • Do not stand on the seagrass or the reef, and take all your rubbish with you.

Best time to go

Go early in the morning, when the water is calmest and the bay is quiet. Avoid the day after storms or strong wind, when visibility drops. Check the live forecast on our home page before choosing your day.

Turtles also nest on Riviera Maya beaches, roughly from May to October. If you see tracks or a nest, keep away, avoid bright lights and flash photography at night, and tell a local conservation group.

What to bring

  • Reef-safe sunscreen or a long-sleeve rash guard
  • Mask, snorkel and water shoes (the condo has kayaks and life jackets for the beach)
  • Some cash for guide and entrance fees
  • A waterproof phone pouch or camera, with the flash switched off
